Challenges
To ensure compliance with security and regulatory standards, we required an automated and fully auditable process for deploying reports from development to production. This process needed to eliminate manual intervention while ensuring absolute consistency between tested and production reports, preventing any discrepancies that could arise from human error.
Another challenge was meeting strict governance rules that required versioning reports without embedded data. While this is manageable in cloud environments, it is significantly more difficult in an on-premise Power BI Report Server setup, which lacks native support for modern deployment practices and version control.
Additionally, business users needed more advanced scheduling capabilities for paginated (RDL) reports than what the native platform offered. Standard scheduling options like „monthly“ or „every Monday“ were too rigid for their needs. Instead, they required custom schedules—such as running reports on specific calendar dates (e.g., December 6) or the first day of selected months (e.g., February, March, May, and August)—demanding a more flexible and user-centric approach.
Our Solution
We created a custom deployment process that enables PBIX files to be version-controlled in TFVC while maintaining separation from embedded data, with automated publishing to Power BI Report Server. This approach guarantees a clean division between data and report logic, delivering consistent, auditable deployments across all environments.
For paginated reports, we built a flexible scheduling engine tailored to business requirements, offering users advanced delivery options that extend well beyond the platform’s native capabilities. This solution empowers teams to configure report distribution according to their precise operational needs.
